Canada plans up to 10 new nuclear reactors by 2040 using CANDU design to expand clean grid capacity

Canada has released a federal nuclear energy strategy calling for up to 10 new large reactors over the next 15 years, using its existing CANDU heavy water design. The plan aims to double grid capacity for electrification, data centers, and industrial demand without adding fossil fuels. It also targets more CANDU exports and a doubling of uranium exports by 2035. The strategy includes two large reactors under construction by 2035, five more by 2040, and small modular reactors for remote communities. But the price tag could exceed 100 billion Canadian dollars, and the government has not yet announced new funding. Public trust, waste management, and Indigenous consent remain open questions that will determine whether this plan moves from paper to power lines.
