Canada oil and gas emissions fell in 2025 despite record output, national emissions rose: report
bnnbloomberg.caA new report from the Canadian Climate Institute shows oil and gas emissions dropped 0.2% in 2025 even as crude production hit a record. Methane reductions from conventional extraction and downstream activity offset higher oilsands emissions. Still, Canada's total emissions rose about 1% to 691 million tonnes, driven by natural gas use for heating and electricity. The report warns that policy changes, including weaker industrial carbon pricing, delayed methane rules, and possible removal of clean electricity regulations, could slow or reverse progress. Canada's emissions are roughly 9.5% below 2005 levels, far short of its 2030 target of 40-45% below. The electricity sector, historically a source of reductions, saw higher gas generation add to emissions last year.
