Canada Nickel and RWE partner to commercialize low-carbon steel for EU and US markets
morningstar.comCanada Nickel Company has signed a memorandum of understanding with RWE Supply & Trading to commercialize low-carbon stainless and alloy steel from its Net Zero Metals subsidiary. The partnership targets customers in Europe and North America, leveraging RWE's carbon trading expertise and knowledge of the EU Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM). The deal focuses on long-term offtake structures for semi-finished steel products, with a definitive agreement expected by the end of 2026. Ontario's low-carbon energy grid gives Canada Nickel a structural cost advantage as CBAM carbon costs rise in Europe. RWE brings market access, carbon trading capabilities, and export credit agency connections. The partnership aims to position low-carbon steel ahead of accelerating EU carbon compliance costs, particularly for wind and battery storage supply chains. A definitive agreement is targeted within 2026.
