Canada delays oil and gas taxonomy category after consultation backlash
sustainableviews.comCanada's taxonomy council has postponed any decision on adding an oil and gas category to the country's green taxonomy. The proposed 'abatement' category would have let certain upstream oil and gas investments count as taxonomy-aligned if they met emissions reduction criteria. More than half of consultation respondents disagreed with the idea, and the council now says further research is needed. The delay gives investors and project developers more time to assess what actually qualifies as green. It also keeps Canada's taxonomy from moving ahead of international norms, where fossil fuel abatement categories remain contested. The question now is what the extra research will look like and whether it leads to a stricter or looser definition.
