Canada Clean Power Growth Faces Grid Constraints, Report Says
sustainabilityonline.netCanada's clean power expansion is being held back by its fragmented electricity grid, according to a new report from GlobalData. The country's non-hydro renewable capacity is expected to grow from 20.6% to 31.4% of the total by 2035, but limited east-west transmission means surplus power from Quebec, Manitoba, and British Columbia cannot easily reach fossil-reliant provinces like Alberta and Saskatchewan. Electricity demand is forecast to rise 1.7% annually, driven by heat pumps, EVs, and data centers. GlobalData says the next decade needs coordinated transmission buildout, faster permitting, and long-term partnerships with Indigenous communities. Federal investment tax credits for clean electricity and interprovincial transmission are in place, but they don't solve the underlying provincial coordination problem.
