Prime Minister Mark Carney and Alberta Premier Danielle Smith have agreed to a new carbon emissions pricing scheme. The deal establishes a minimum price for carbon credits to prevent market flooding and sets a headline price increase to 140 CAD per tonne by 2040. As part of the agreement, the federal government may declare a new bitumen pipeline to the West Coast in the national interest, with a target construction start date of fall 2027. The project remains contingent on the Pathways carbon-capture initiative and Indigenous consultations.
