Prime Minister Mark Carney and Alberta Premier Danielle Smith have agreed to a new carbon pricing framework for Alberta. The deal includes raising the headline carbon price to 140 per tonne by 2040 and implementing a minimum price for carbon credits to prevent market flooding and incentivize actual decarbonization. As part of the agreement, the federal government is eyeing a fall 2027 construction start for a new bitumen pipeline to the West Coast. This approval is tied to the progress of the Pathways carbon capture project and successful consultations with First Nations and British Columbia.
