Prime Minister Mark Carney and Alberta Premier Danielle Smith have reached an agreement to implement a new carbon emissions pricing scheme in Alberta. The deal sets a headline carbon price of $140 per tonne by 2040 and introduces a minimum price for carbon credits to prevent market flooding and better incentivize decarbonization. As part of the pact, the federal government will declare a new bitumen pipeline to the West Coast as being in the national interest. Construction is targeted for fall 2027, contingent on the progress of the Pathways carbon-capture project and consultations with First Nations and British Columbia.
