Researchers have discovered that the Great Atlantic Sargassum Belt has become a self-fertilizing biological system, allowing it to grow independently of traditional nutrient sources. This massive accumulation of seaweed captures significant amounts of carbon, but much of it is released back into the atmosphere when the mats rot on Caribbean beaches. New predictive modeling may allow for large-scale offshore harvesting. By collecting the seaweed before it reaches the coast, the captured carbon could be locked away in biochar or converted into biofuels, turning an environmental nuisance into a viable carbon removal tool.
