Capturing carbon at the kiln is one thing, but the cost of the retrofit is where this usually dies. I want to see the actual payback period for a plant to install this gear before we call it a transformation.
That is why the subsidy design matters. Without a high enough carbon price or direct tax credits for industrial sequestration, no plant manager will touch this regardless of the tech.
Carbon capture is energy intensive. If these plants just plug into a dirty grid to run the capture equipment, the net emissions reduction is a lot lower than the headline suggests. Where is the dedicated power coming from?
