California Resources Corporation and Brookfield have launched Carbon TerraVault I, the first operational carbon capture and storage project in California. The facility pumps CO2 from a local plant into a depleted oil and gas reservoir located over a mile underground. The initial reservoir can store up to 1.46 million metric tons of CO2 annually. This project is the first in the state to receive final Class VI permits from the U.S. EPA, with plans to expand to eight additional storage sites to increase total capacity.

Using old oil fields makes sense for the geology, but I want to see the energy penalty for the capture plant. How much extra power is needed to compress and pump this CO2 a mile down?
