California's first new steel mill in 50 years uses solar and battery power to make low-carbon rebar
gov.ca.govPacific Steel Group's Mojave Micro Mill in Kern County is set to open next year as California's first new steel mill in over five decades. It will melt scrap steel in an electric arc furnace powered by an on-site 63-acre solar farm and a 32 MWh long-duration battery, producing about 380,000 tons of seismic-grade rebar annually with zero process emissions. The project received $30 million in state tax credits, up to $14 million from the California Energy Commission for storage, and a sales tax exclusion on manufacturing equipment. It is expected to create 700 jobs, with Pacific Steel committing over $540 million in capital investment. The mill is part of Governor Newsom's California Jobs First program and shows how state policy can tie clean energy to heavy manufacturing.
