California Resources Corporation has begun the first carbon dioxide injections at its Carbon TerraVault I project in Kern County. This facility uses depleted oil and gas reservoirs to store CO2 more than a mile underground, marking a first for the state. Backed by EPA Class VI permits and a partnership with Brookfield, the project aims to establish a large scale carbon storage business. The move signals a shift for the company as it attempts to balance traditional oil production with carbon management services.
