California Resources Corporation has begun injecting CO2 at the Carbon TerraVault I facility in Kern County. This project marks the first operational carbon capture and storage site in California to receive EPA Class VI permits, utilizing depleted oil and gas reservoirs for permanent storage. The facility can store up to 1.46 million metric tons of CO2 annually. CRC and Brookfield are partnering to expand this capacity, with eight additional reservoirs currently awaiting permits to potentially store hundreds of millions of tons of carbon.
