California Resources Corporation has begun injecting CO2 into the Carbon TerraVault I project, marking the state's first commercial scale carbon capture and storage operation. The project uses a depleted oil and gas reservoir to store emissions from a cryogenic gas plant, with a capacity of 1.46 million metric tonnes per year. This deployment is part of California's broader strategy to hit net zero by 2045, where CCS is expected to provide 25% of the necessary reductions. The company has already applied for permits for eight additional reservoirs to expand total storage capacity.
