Calgary Completes Sunnyside Flood Barrier: 2.4 km Protection Against 1-in-100-Year Flood
reminetwork.comCalgary has finished its Sunnyside Flood Barrier, a 2.4 kilometer line of permanent walls, sheet piles, demountable sections, and deployable systems. It protects the Sunnyside and Hillhurst neighborhoods from a flood that has a one percent chance of happening in any year. The project cost $73 million over roughly ten years. Along with flood defense, the work added nine seating areas, two food truck pads, upgraded pathways, and around 200 new trees. Landscaping and pathway work is expected to wrap up by the end of October 2026.
