Calgary CNG bus crash: expert says compressed natural gas transit fleet remains extremely safe after deadly explosion
winnipeg.citynews.caA deadly Calgary bus crash is putting compressed natural gas transit under the microscope. Three people died after a CNG-powered bus hit several vehicles and rear-ended a parked bus, causing an explosion. CUTRIC CEO Josipa Petrunic says CNG buses are extremely safe technology and investigators need to figure out what broke down in the crash sequence. Canada has nearly 1,000 CNG buses in operation, and Calgary Transit runs about 250 of them, roughly 20 percent of its fleet. The city planned to buy another 150 this year. Nova Bus, which made the rear-ended bus, says it is cooperating with the investigation and it is too early to speculate on cause. Petrunic also points to seatbelts as the bigger safety gap in public transit. The crash raises questions about fuel system safety in real-world collisions, but experts say the answer is investigation, not abandoning a fuel type that cuts diesel use.
