Cal Poly Humboldt cuts net emissions 32% since 2017, moves toward 2045 carbon neutrality
now.humboldt.eduCal Poly Humboldt has reduced net greenhouse gas emissions by 32% since its first Climate Action Plan in 2017, according to a new progress report. The university has completed 58% of the actions in its Climate Action Plan 2.0, which targets carbon neutrality by 2045. Key drivers include replacing natural gas boilers with electric heat pumps, expanding solar generation and battery storage via a microgrid, and purchasing renewable electricity. The report also notes progress in transportation, waste reduction, and climate resilience. Natural gas remains the largest source of direct campus emissions, making the shift to electric heating and on-site renewables critical. The university will update its climate plan this fall, with input from students, faculty, and local partners.
