Cairn reports 25% cut in carbon emissions over five years with methane and water initiatives

Oil and gas producer Cairn, part of Vedanta, says it cut absolute carbon emissions by roughly 25% over five years. The company currently avoids about 410,000 tonnes of CO2 equivalent annually through afforestation, water recycling, methane management, and ecosystem restoration at sites in Rajasthan, Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, and the North East. Cairn has planted around 800,000 saplings in three years toward a 2030 target of 2 million trees. It recycled over 86% of water used in operations in FY26 and recovered 155,393 barrels of hydrocarbons from oil sludge. The company also achieved Gold Standard Pathway status under the UNEP Oil and Gas Methane Partnership and pledged to cut absolute methane emissions by 30% over the next five years.
