Business Stream Funds Mexico Reforestation to Restore Jaguar Habitat and Offset Carbon Emissions
insideecology.comBusiness Stream, a UK water retailer, has extended its partnership with climate action platform Ecologi to fund the 'Reforesting the Land of the Jaguar' project in southeast Mexico. The initiative aims to plant over 1 million native hardwood trees near the Laguna de Terminos nature reserve, restoring degraded land and creating habitat for endangered species like the Mexican jaguar, spider monkey, and great curassow. The project claims to remove 1 million tonnes of CO2 per 20-year cycle and also provides 50 permanent local jobs while producing haematoxylin, a natural dye for regional industries. Business Stream's investment covers its 2025-26 Scope 1 and 2 emissions as part of its goal to reach net zero by 2030. The company emphasizes that this offsets its own carbon footprint while also supporting biodiversity and community livelihoods. Ecologi, a B Corp-certified platform, says it has enabled over 16,000 businesses to fund the planting of more than 95 million trees, avoiding or removing over 4.16 million tonnes of CO2 to date. This story highlights how corporate sustainability budgets can be directed toward verified environmental projects with multiple benefits beyond carbon accounting.
