Busan is hosting a strategic seminar on November 20 to explore the role of Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) in decarbonizing the global shipping industry. The event brings together shipbuilding leaders and researchers to discuss the technical feasibility of nuclear-powered vessels as a long-term alternative to LNG and methanol. Major Korean firms like HD Korea Shipbuilding and Samsung Heavy Industries are already developing SMR and molten salt reactor designs for container ships and LNG carriers. The discussions will focus on overcoming technical hurdles and navigating IMO and IAEA safety regulations for port entry.
