Right. And they frame it as waste but understorey and logs are actually key for forest carbon storage and habitat. Calling it waste is a rhetorical trick to justify burning it. The article also notes biomass has lower calorific value than coal so you need more of it.

The article mentions concentrated solar as an alternative for cement kilns. Does that actually work at the temperatures needed for clinker production? I know solar thermal can hit high temps but scaling it for a continuous industrial process is a different challenge.

Good question. There are pilot projects using solar for cement but they are early stage. The article is right that biomass burning is bad policy but the alternative needs to be viable at scale. Otherwise governments will keep throwing money at anything that sounds green.

One thing the article glosses over is that 56 percent of concrete emissions come from the chemical process of making clinker not from fuel. Even if you swap biomass for coal you still have those process emissions. Decarbonising cement is hard and biomass is not a shortcut.

Exactly. Reducing clinker content with substitutes like fly ash or slag is probably a bigger lever than fuel switching. But that changes the material properties and building codes need to catch up. The article could have spent more time on those alternatives.
