BURN gets CORSIA-eligible status for 5.2 million Nigerian clean cookstove carbon credits
businessday.ngBURN has received authorization from Nigeria's National Council on Climate Change for 5.2 million carbon credits tied to its clean cookstove operations. The credits come from stoves distributed to Nigerian households and have been tagged by Gold Standard as eligible under CORSIA, the airline offsetting scheme. This is the first Article 6.2 authorization for a Nigerian clean cooking project. BURN says it has distributed close to one million stoves in Nigeria and manufactures about 40,000 units a month in Kano. Investment from Key Carbon and the AfricaGoGreen Fund backed the credit development. The timing matters because CORSIA's first compliance phase requires airlines to retire eligible offsets by January 2028. Nigeria approved its Carbon Market Framework in January 2026. This project is an early test of whether that framework can deliver credits that international buyers trust, with corresponding adjustments handled correctly and verified emissions reductions reaching the market.
