Bureau Veritas Marine & Offshore has classed the CMA CGM NOTRE DAME, the first of a series of 24,000 TEU LNG dual-fuel ultra-large container ships built by Jiangsu Yangzi Xinfu Shipbuilding. The vessel, delivered in May, uses LNG to cut sulfur oxides, nitrogen oxides, and carbon dioxide emissions. It measures 399.9 meters long and 61.3 meters wide, with a capacity of 24,092 standard containers. Bureau Veritas worked closely with the shipyard during design and construction, reviewing structural reinforcement, hull form optimization, and LNG fuel system safety. The classification marks progress in Chinese shipbuilding for next-generation ultra-large container ships and supports the maritime industry's shift to lower-carbon fuels. This project highlights how classification societies can help ensure safety and efficiency in new vessel designs.

LNG dual fuel is a step forward but still a fossil fuel. The real question is how much methane slip happens in these engines and whether the net GHG benefit holds up over the full lifecycle.

The article mentions lower CO2 but no numbers. I would like to see the actual emission reduction percentages compared to HFO. Without that it is hard to gauge how meaningful this is.

Interesting that BV did hull form optimization to improve efficiency. That is often overlooked. Better hydrodynamics can cut fuel burn by a few percent regardless of the fuel type.

24,000 TEU is massive. The scale of these vessels means even small efficiency gains add up fast in absolute fuel savings. But the bunkering infrastructure for LNG still needs to catch up globally.

CMA CGM is betting big on LNG as a bridge fuel. The question is whether regulators will tighten methane regulations enough to make that bet pay off or if ammonia and methanol will leapfrog LNG.
