Bureau Veritas and UK NZCBS launch verification scheme for net zero carbon buildings
sustainabilitymag.comBureau Veritas and the UK Net Zero Carbon Buildings Standard (NZCBS) have launched a verification scheme to help organizations validate net zero carbon claims for buildings. The scheme requires measured in-use performance data, including 12 months of operational energy data and as-built embodied carbon information, rather than relying on design estimates. Independent third-party verification is meant to reduce greenwashing and give investors and occupiers confidence that buildings are genuinely low carbon. The NZCBS standard covers operational energy, embodied carbon, renewable electricity, water use, and other environmental metrics. Buildings that meet all requirements can be awarded Net Zero Carbon Aligned status. The scheme also offers a Practical Completion On Track assessment for new buildings and a Performance Evaluation route for assets that have not yet met every requirement. Bureau Veritas acts as the Verification Administrator, ensuring consistent and rigorous assessments. The verification process is based on documented, measured performance, with claims valid for the one-year retrospective period covered by monitored energy data. The scheme is expected to create a growing portfolio of independently verified low-carbon assets that support the UK's net zero transition.
