Burckhardt Compression lands contract for Northern Lights CCS CO2 carrier

Burckhardt Compression secured a contract to supply compression systems for the first industrial-scale liquefied CO2 carrier serving the Northern Lights CCS project. The vessel will transport captured carbon from industrial facilities to permanent offshore storage, a key step in moving CCS from pilot to commercial scale. The deal highlights the growing role of maritime CO2 transport where pipelines are not feasible. Burckhardt will deploy its K-Laby compressor technology, chosen for efficiency and durability in marine environments. Northern Lights, operational since 2025, is the first cross-border CO2 transport and storage network and is expanding capacity to meet European demand. This project signals that CCS infrastructure is moving beyond demonstration phase. Reliable compression and shipping are becoming critical for connecting emitters to storage sites at scale, which matters for the economics of carbon removal and industrial decarbonization.
