Bulgaria has reduced its net greenhouse gas emissions by 57.8% compared to 1990 levels, ranking fifth in the EU for emissions cuts, according to a new analysis by SeeNext. The report highlights that the country added 2.5 GWh of grid-connected battery storage in 2025 alone, a 1,200% year-on-year increase, making it the third largest battery storage market in the EU behind Germany and Italy. Installed battery capacity reached 3.3 GW by May 2026, positioning Bulgaria as one of the highest density markets for battery energy storage systems globally. Renewable electricity accounted for 33.84% of generation in 2024, with a target of 49.34% by 2030. Total installed renewable capacity reached 10.04 GW in 2025, including 6 GW of solar. The report notes that electrification is key to reducing fossil fuel imports and improving energy security. However, Bulgaria remains one of the EU's most carbon-intensive economies per unit of GDP, ranking second in that metric, partly due to its industrial base and population decline of 26.6% since 1990.
