Buffalo affordable housing complex installs 3.75 MWh battery for backup power and grid relief
thebusinessjournal.comA 3.75 MWh lithium-ion battery system is now operating at Peace Bridge Place, an affordable housing complex in Buffalo, New York. The battery is designed to charge when power is plentiful and cheap, then run the building when grid demand is high or during outages. Viridi and Good Carbon Co. installed the system with support from NYSERDA, and National Grid can call on it to reduce demand on the local grid. The project is part of a broader push to show that larger batteries can be installed safely inside residential buildings. Viridi says it spent six years testing a fireproof enclosure that isolates failed cells, and the system has a UL 9540 listing for indoor use without extra fire suppression. The building is all-electric and uses geothermal heating and cooling, so the battery adds resilience without relying on natural gas.
