BS-VII emission standards: India proposes phased rollout from April 2029, tighter particulate measurement
businesstoday.inIndia's Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has proposed a three-phase rollout for Bharat Stage VII emission standards, starting with passenger cars and SUVs in April 2029. Small commercial vehicles follow in 2030, with heavy trucks, buses and construction equipment covered by April 2035. The schedule aligns with Europe's Euro 7 rules. The draft keeps the main tailpipe limits for carbon monoxide, NOx and particulate matter unchanged from BS-VI. The bigger shift is measurement: particulates will be counted down to 10 nanometers instead of 23, catching finer particles. BS-VII also brings in limits on tyre and brake wear, durability requirements for EV batteries, and independent testing of vehicles already on the road. Automakers have warned the timeline could pull engineering resources away from EV development.
