Brussels air quality continues to improve, with all current European air pollution limits met across the region in 2025, according to the latest report from Brussels Environment. Concentrations of fine particulate matter, ozone, sulfur dioxide, and carbon monoxide are within both current and future EU standards. Nitrogen dioxide levels, linked to road traffic, remain a challenge near busy roads but have met annual limits for six consecutive years. The improvements reflect policies promoting cleaner mobility and the energy transition. Black carbon from diesel engines has also fallen. Despite progress, Brussels Environment warns that WHO guidelines are stricter than EU laws and have not been met everywhere. The report shows that ambitious environmental policies can deliver measurable health benefits, especially for vulnerable groups.
