BRTC seeks Tk 400 crore grant for 100 electric buses and charging stations in Bangladesh

The Bangladesh Road Transport Corporation (BRTC) has proposed allocating Tk 400 crore from the FY2026-27 budget to buy 100 electric buses, set up 25 charging stations, and build supporting infrastructure. The plan targets key routes in Dhaka and intercity connections between divisional cities. BRTC argues that a grant or equity is needed because its internal funds cannot cover the cost, and a loan would create unsustainable debt for a public service operator. The proposal includes Tk 250 crore for the buses, Tk 50 crore for charging stations, and smaller amounts for equipment, training, and depot upgrades. The government's election manifesto commitments to a green transport corridor and lower carbon emissions are cited as policy backing. If approved, the project would reduce imported fuel dependence and cut air pollution in one of the world's most congested cities. This is a concrete step toward electrifying public transport in a developing country, but the funding model remains a sticking point. The Finance Division previously advised a development project loan, which BRTC rejected. The outcome will signal how seriously Bangladesh prioritizes transit decarbonization over short-term budget constraints.
