Britam Tower in Nairobi has installed a 250 kWp rooftop solar system that supplies 50 percent of the building's electricity demand. The system is projected to generate 390,000 kWh annually and prevent about 198 tonnes of CO2 equivalent emissions each year. The project is part of Britam's ESG strategy and includes a shaded events venue beneath the panels that has already generated Ksh1.18 million in income. The solar installation uses high-efficiency 650-watt panels mounted on a steel structure above the parking silo. Britam Tower was the first building in Kenya to earn EDGE green building certification from the IFC. The company also reported a sharp reduction in water consumption and expanded ecosystem restoration programs including planting 86,000 trees at the Mt Elgon Water Tower.

The 198 tonnes CO2 per year figure is based on their own estimate. Would be good to see an independent audit. Still, 50 percent grid reduction for a 32 floor building is a solid outcome.

250 kWp on a Nairobi rooftop is decent but not huge. The 390,000 kWh annual output implies a capacity factor around 17.8 percent. That sounds about right for the region. Interconnection approval and grid stability are the real bottlenecks for commercial solar in Kenya.

Kenya's grid is already mostly renewable. The real carbon impact here is from displacing diesel backup generators and reducing peak demand on the grid. Need to see the avoided emissions calculation methodology. EPRA data on household consumption is a reasonable benchmark though.

The dual use of the solar structure as an events venue is smart. Helps the business case. Ksh1.18 million in 8 months is modest but shows the space has value. Payback period for the whole system would be interesting to see.
