Northern Gas Networks has proposed a 1.2 billion pound hydrogen pipeline project across Teesside and the Humber, two of Britain's largest industrial clusters. The plan includes two underground routes: a 39-mile line from Newton Aycliffe to Skinningrove and a 68-mile line from Saltend to Ferrybridge. Backers say the project could support up to 1,200 jobs and help heavy industries like steel, chemicals, and glass cut emissions by switching from natural gas to low-carbon hydrogen. The proposal is still in early development, with design and planning work underway. It will need approval through the UK's Development Consent Order process, which includes public consultation and environmental review. The timeline points to construction starting in the 2030s. The project is part of the UK's broader goal to reach 10 gigawatts of low-carbon hydrogen production capacity by 2030, though the pipeline itself would come later. For hard-to-abate industries that cannot easily electrify, hydrogen remains one of the few realistic options to reduce emissions. But the plan faces open questions about hydrogen cost, production volume, and who pays for the infrastructure. The real test will be whether the pipeline can move from proposal to operation before industrial users lose confidence in the timeline.
