Bristol City Council has banned high carbon advertising on council owned spaces. The policy covers fossil fuels, SUVs, cruises, flights, Black Friday style sales, and ultra fast fashion. Bristol is the first UK city to extend the ban to fast fashion, following a campaign by Adfree Cities. The textile sector accounts for up to 10 percent of global carbon emissions and nearly 10 percent of microplastic pollution, according to UNEP. Supporters say the ban stops public space being used to promote products that undermine climate goals. Critics may ask how enforcement will work in practice. The move is part of a wider push by Adfree Cities and other groups to restrict advertising for high emission products. Similar restrictions are now in place in nearly two dozen UK cities, and the council is reportedly looking at banning ads for unsustainable food in a future revision.
