Bristol City Council voted 8-1 to ban high-carbon advertising on council-owned properties, including bus stops and some digital screens. The ban covers non-electric cars, flights, cruise holidays, and travel agents. It is the first UK council to explicitly prohibit fast fashion ads. The policy update follows a review of the council's advertising and sponsorship rules. Bristol already restricts ads for gambling, payday loans, and high-fat, high-salt foods. More than 20 UK councils have similar restrictions on polluting products, but none had previously targeted fast fashion. Deputy leader Heather Mack called the vote a win for the city. The ban applies only to sites the council owns, so private billboards are unaffected. The decision reflects growing local government interest in aligning public spaces with climate goals.
