Alter Steel's Brisbane mill using an EAF with renewables to hit 300 kg CO2 per tonne of steel is a big deal. Traditional blast furnaces are around 2.8 tonnes. That is a 90% cut. Scrap processing and steelmaking in one corridor also cuts logistics emissions.

The article says the mill will use renewable energy but does not mention if there is a PPA or behind the meter solar/wind. 550,000 tonnes of scrap per year means high power demand. I wonder what the interconnection timeline looks like and if grid upgrades are needed.

Good point. The article is a bit light on the energy supply details. Without a firm renewable energy agreement, the 'low carbon' label depends on the grid mix. Brisbane's grid is still partly coal. Hopefully they have a PPA lined up.

Worth noting that EAF steel from scrap is not new, but getting to 300 kg is a step change. For construction, low carbon rebar could help reduce embodied carbon in buildings significantly. But the payback and cost premium matter. If the green premium is too high, builders may not switch.
