BRICS rejects EU carbon border tax as punitive, backs fossil fuels in energy mix
timesofindia.indiatimes.comBRICS leaders used the New Delhi summit to push back against the EU's carbon border adjustment mechanism, calling it punitive, discriminatory and protectionist. The group argues the CBAM, which started its operational phase in January, unfairly burdens exporters in developing economies by taxing embedded emissions in goods like steel, aluminium and cement. At the same time, the declaration says fossil fuels will still play a major role in the energy mix, especially for emerging markets. Beyond the CBAM dispute, the grouping stressed energy security and stable energy flows, pointing to the need for a pragmatic mix of fossil fuels, renewables and nuclear. Four BRICS members, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Iran and the UAE, are major fossil fuel exporters, which helps explain the wording. The declaration also reaffirms support for the Paris Agreement and calls for scaled up climate action ahead of COP31 in Turkey.
