Brics Delhi Declaration rejects CBAM and unilateral carbon tariffs: What it means for India and EU trade
business-standard.comThe Brics New Delhi Declaration, issued at the 18th Brics Summit, explicitly opposes carbon border adjustment mechanisms like the EU's CBAM, calling them unilateral, punitive and protectionist. The declaration says such measures hurt developing countries' efforts to adapt to climate change and build resilience. India has long pushed back on CBAM, and the issue was a sticking point in FTA talks with Brussels. Beyond CBAM, the grouping criticised unilateral tariff and non-tariff measures that distort trade and conflict with WTO rules. Brics members also backed customs cooperation and local currency settlement, though the declaration stops short of proposing an alternative carbon pricing framework. For exporters in steel, cement, aluminium and other high-emission sectors, the practical question remains how CBAM will be applied and whether exemptions or adjustments are possible.
