Breed for CH4nge: New Genetic Index to Lower Methane Emissions in Sheep
meatmanagement.comThe Breed for CH4nge project has developed a new breeding value index to help sheep farmers reduce their carbon footprint. By identifying heritable traits linked to lower methane output, the tool allows breeders to select animals with a naturally lower environmental impact without sacrificing productivity. Funded by Defra, the initiative used data from 40 flocks to prove that methane emissions are heritable. The new tools will be integrated into performance recording systems like Innovis and Signet to help the UK sheep industry improve sustainability and meet consumer demand for low carbon meat.
