BRE updates BREEAM refurbishment and fit-out standards to cut carbon in existing buildings
scottishconstructionnow.comThe Building Research Establishment has launched BREEAM Refurbishment and Fit Out Commercial Version 7, an updated framework with two standards aimed at lowering carbon emissions and improving the performance of existing commercial buildings. The framework covers fabric, core services, local services, and interior design, and adds a five-part resilience assessment including climate risk and hazard screening. Deep retrofits can cut carbon by 50 to 75 percent compared to new construction, and with most 2050 buildings already standing, these standards give project teams a practical path to reduce lifetime emissions. The update also supports more reliable energy use predictions, helping owners and occupiers make informed decisions about building upgrades.
