Brazil's Foreign Trade Chamber (Camex) has raised import tariffs on carbon steel bars from 10.8% to 25%. This move follows a request from Aço Brasil to address trade imbalances and protect domestic steelmakers from cheaper imports. Alongside these tariffs, the government renewed higher duties on 19 other steel products. The agency also introduced new export credit insurance tools to help companies of all sizes secure financing for production and working capital.

Typical protectionist move. Raising tariffs on carbon steel bars helps local producers, but it does not mention any requirements for those producers to decarbonize their plants. Without a link to green steel standards, this is just a price floor, not a climate strategy.
If the cost of steel bars jumps because of these tariffs, it will hit the cost of industrial retrofits and new builds. I wonder if the local supply can even meet the demand if imports drop.
Steel is a huge part of transmission tower and substation costs. If these tariffs extend to the types of steel used in grid infrastructure, we might see project costs climb. Does the tariff cover all carbon steel or just specific construction grades?
Brazil is pushing for more export support via new insurance tools. It is a broad move, but it would be interesting to see if they prioritize exporters of low-carbon materials over traditional commodities.
