BP expects USD 1 billion Q2 impairment in low-carbon energy segment
renewablesnow.comBP announced it expects around USD 1 billion in impairments for the second quarter of 2026, mostly tied to its gas and low-carbon energy businesses. The oil major did not specify which assets are affected, but the write-down signals ongoing pressure on clean energy investments from legacy fossil fuel companies. BP is scheduled to release full Q2 results on August 4. Despite the impairment, BP said higher oil prices and refining margins will boost its quarterly earnings by USD 1.8 billion to USD 2.1 billion compared to Q1. Upstream production is expected to drop due to seasonal maintenance in the Gulf of America and disruptions in the Middle East. The contrast between rising fossil fuel profits and low-carbon write-downs highlights the uneven economics of the energy transition for oil majors.
