Researchers have successfully created boron buckminsterfullerene, a soccer ball shaped molecule known as B80. This discovery challenges previous computational theories and opens new possibilities for materials science, as the structure is electronically similar to the well known carbon C60 buckyball. Potential applications for bulk B80 include high efficiency hydrogen storage, semiconductors, and superconductors. While bulk synthesis remains a challenge due to boron's conductivity and isotopic properties, the experimental proof of the B80 cage provides a foundation for developing new low carbon industrial materials.
