Bon Iver, Elliott Smith and More Release Recycled Vinyl Editions to Cut Record Label Waste and Emissions
thatericalper.comSeveral independent labels including Secretly Group, Warp Records, Ninja Tune, and Beggars Group have teamed up with Music Declares Emergency and the Music Climate Pact to release albums pressed entirely from reclaimed vinyl. The recycled records use manufacturing trim, quality rejects, and unsold stock instead of new virgin plastic. Titles include Bon Iver's For Emma, Forever Ago, Elliott Smith's Roman Candle, and Black Country, New Road's Forever Howlong. The campaign launched on World Environment Day 2026 and spans the U.S., Canada, and the UK. Secretly Group says manufacturing is typically the largest source of carbon emissions for record labels, and the company reports a 70 percent reduction in its manufacturing footprint against its 2023 baseline. Beggars Group has committed to halving its carbon emissions by 2030, and Ninja Tune is expanding its use of surplus PVC. Recycled vinyl has a visible marbled look because the reclaimed material varies from copy to copy. The labels behind this collection are positioning that variation as part of the appeal while trying to make recycled pressing a standard option rather than a one-off novelty.
