A Bolton based organisation called Turn Up the Value has launched the Bolton Eco Toolkit to help community groups, charities, and social enterprises reduce their environmental impact. The toolkit includes a sustainability self assessment, free downloadable resources, and carbon literacy training for community leaders. An event on July 8th will teach the basics of climate science and how to build a personal and community carbon reduction plan. The toolkit also offers one to one support and a way to measure sustainability progress. In April, eight local groups each won 750 pounds to deliver eco projects through a Pitch for the Planet event. One group, Resilience Bridge, is using the funds to bring teenagers from ethnic minorities into Bolton parks for mindfulness and nature activities. The project is funded by Bolton CVS and aims to help organisations at any stage of their environmental journey take practical steps. With over 157,000 people certified in Carbon Literacy across the UK, the toolkit provides a structured way for local groups to act on climate change without requiring prior expertise.

A toolkit for VCSE groups is fine as a starting point but the actual carbon impact from this kind of work is hard to measure. The self assessment is a baseline but without follow up data it is just good intentions.

Worth noting this is funded by Bolton CVS which is a local infrastructure body. The model is replicable if other CVS organisations pick it up. But it depends on local funding priorities.
