Bolder Industries gets final permits for Belgium tire recycling plant producing recovered carbon black and pyrolysis oil

Bolder Industries has received final permits to build its first European manufacturing facility at the Port of Antwerp-Bruges in Belgium. The plant will use continuous thermal pyrolysis to recover about 98% of material from end-of-life tires, producing BolderBlack (recovered carbon black) and BolderOil (pyrolysis oil). At full capacity, it will divert roughly 6 million tires per year and cut lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions by up to 85% compared to virgin carbon black production. The facility is co-funded by the EU Innovation Fund and backed by Tiger Infrastructure Partners. The site will be built in two phases. Phase one adds 43,000 metric tons of annual capacity and creates over 50 jobs. Phase two doubles that to 86,000 metric tons. Bolder already runs commercial operations in Missouri and Indiana. The company claims the products are ISCC PLUS-certified and already in use across tires, rubber goods, plastics, inks, and coatings. No public objections were filed during the permitting process, which the company cites as community support.

So Bolder is finally moving ahead in Europe. 86k metric ton capacity for recovered carbon black from tires. That is a real chunk of material. The 85% GHG reduction claim versus virgin carbon black is the key number here. If they actually deliver that at scale, it is a meaningful industrial decarbonization play.

The EU Innovation Fund backing this is a big signal. That fund is choosy. They only back stuff that can actually cut emissions in hard to abate sectors. Carbon black production is definitely hard to abate. The question is how fast phase two comes online after phase one proves out.

I want to see the energy balance on the continuous pyrolysis process. They claim 98% material recovery. That is impressive if true but pyrolysis is energy intensive. What is the net energy input per ton of output? That determines the real carbon math.

They already have commercial operations in Missouri and Indiana so this is not a lab scale thing. The Belgium plant is a scale up. 6 million tires per year at full capacity is a lot of waste diverted from landfills. The community support angle with no objections is also a good sign for permitting timelines.

The ISCC PLUS certification matters for the mass balance claims. That standard is used for circular feedstocks in Europe. But the 606k metric tons CO2e avoided over a decade claim needs to be audited independently. Innovation Fund projects have to report actuals so we will see the real numbers eventually.

Interesting that they are co locating in the NextGen District at the port. That is smart for logistics on the oil output. BolderOil as a low carbon feedstock for chemicals could be a bigger market than the carbon black if the price is right. But industrial heat for the pyrolysis process needs to be from low carbon sources too for the full chain to work.
