Cyan Ventures launched a Green Fuels Accelerator to help seven Australian low carbon liquid fuel projects reach financial close and commercial production. The initiative is backed by ARENA, Qantas, and Boeing. It provides regulatory, technical, and financing support to reduce Australia's reliance on imported jet fuel, which often covers over two-thirds of domestic demand. The goal is to turn local feedstocks into operating SAF plants. Separately, Technip Energies, Airbus, Safran, and Tereos formed a joint venture called Rebound to build a large-scale SAF facility at the Port of Dunkirk in France. It will use the Alcohol-to-Jet pathway to produce about 160,000 tons of SAF per year. The project targets the EU's RefuelEU mandate, which requires 6% SAF blending by 2030 and 70% by 2050. Both projects show growing industrial momentum behind aviation decarbonization, but they still need final investment decisions and offtake agreements to move forward.

Two separate SAF pushes here. The Cyan Ventures accelerator in Australia is interesting because it targets early stage project finance gaps. But seven projects is a lot for a pilot. Curious how many actually reach FID.

The Rebound project in France is more concrete. Technip Energies as lead developer, site secured at Dunkirk, Alcohol-to-Jet pathway. Still pre-FEED though. The 160k tons per year target is ambitious for a first of a kind at that scale.

SAF is the only real option for aviation decarbonization right now, but the volumes are tiny compared to global jet fuel demand. 160k tons per year from Dunkirk is a drop. Need dozens of these facilities to move the needle.

The EU mandate is the key driver. 6% by 2030 means demand is guaranteed if the fuel can be produced at a competitive price. The question is whether Alcohol-to-Jet can scale fast enough and cheap enough.

Worth noting ARENA funding the Australian accelerator. That is a practical policy move. Direct grant support for project development de risking. More effective than just setting mandates without helping projects get built.
