BNZ and Pāmu Launch Carbon Removal Leasing for Native Forests in Hawke's Bay
farmersweekly.co.nzBNZ and state farming company Pāmu are piloting a new model that lets landowners earn revenue from existing native forests by leasing the land to entities seeking carbon removal credits. The first deal covers a 600-hectare block in Hawke's Bay, which will be QEII-covenanted. Carbon removals will be measured and accredited under international standards like the Greenhouse Gas Protocol and ISO 14064-1, with CarbonCrop providing tracking and verification. The model is designed for forests planted before 1990, which are not eligible for New Zealand's Emissions Trading Scheme. Revenue from the lease will be reinvested into pest control and biodiversity improvements on the land. Pāmu plans to scale the approach to other retired lands and eventually make it available to the wider rural sector after a standardization period aligned with audit cycles.
