BMW cuts X5 lifecycle CO2 by 40% with battery cells and steel leading supply chain decarbonization

Battery cells were the single largest lever, with Gen6 cells cutting CO2e by 28% per watt hour versus the previous generation. The company now requires all battery cell suppliers to use 100% renewable energy. Steel remains the largest material by mass, and BMW now sources around 50% of flat steel for the X5 body from electric arc furnaces with high secondary content and renewable energy. Recycled aluminum accounts for 35% of door material, sourced from BMW's own press shop. However, the company notes that scaling recycled battery-grade materials remains difficult due to insufficient supply in the market.
