The Sunshine Coast Council and LMS Energy have launched a new renewable energy facility at the Northern Waste Precinct in Bli Bli. The plant captures landfill biogas to power a one-megawatt engine, generating approximately 9,000 megawatt hours of electricity annually. This project focuses on methane destruction to lower greenhouse gas emissions by an estimated 55,000 tonnes per year. The initiative is funded by LMS Energy and generates carbon credits through the Australian Carbon Credit Unit Scheme.

LMS Energy built this for 3 million dollars at no cost to the council. It captures methane from the Bli Bli landfill to put 9,000 MWh back into the grid. Good to see a project actually using the ACCU scheme to make the math work.

A 1MW engine is a decent start, but I wonder about the actual capacity factor here. Landfill gas flow fluctuates as the site ages. Do they have a plan for when the gas yield peaks and then drops off?

The maintenance on these gas engines can be a pain. I hope the agreement with LMS includes a strict long term upkeep schedule, otherwise the efficiency drops fast and the emissions benefits slide.

The mention of the Australian Carbon Credit Unit Scheme is the real driver here. Without those credits, the 3 million dollar capex would be a much harder sell for a private operator. It is a textbook example of using market incentives to handle methane.
